LEIGH -- Walter E. Bakenhus, 83, of Leigh died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at the
Stanton Nursing Home.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Christ Lutheran Church in rural Columbus
with the Rev. John E. Nelson Jr. officiating. Burial will be at Christ
Lutheran Cemetery in rural Columbus.
Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Wednesday at Gass Haney Funeral Home in Columbus
and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. There will be a family prayer
service at 10:15 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Mr. Bakenhus was born Feb. 28, 1918, in Platte County to Oscar and Martha
(Otte) Bakenhus. He attended rural district school and also Christ Lutheran
School. He married Lorraine Settgast on May 23, 1948, in rural Columbus. They farmed
south of Leigh.
He was very active in the church and held various church offices. He was a
life-long member of the church.
In February he moved to the nursing home.
Survivors include one son, Byron (Joan) Bakenhus of Lincoln; two daughters,
Janice (Chad) Konop of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Linda (Mike) Taege of Norfolk;
two sisters, Esther Bakenhus of Columbus and Arloa (Loren) Fittje of
Humphrey; two brothers, Ora Bakenhus of Iowa and Orden (Helen) Bakenhus of
Harlingen, Texas; seven grandchildren; four step grandchildren; one
great-grandson and five step great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1981; one brother, Orvis Bakenhus;
