Melvin attended Timber Hill/Hill Siding School and Zion Lutheran School in Leigh, NE.
He entered US Military Service 1942 and in 1943 received an honorable discharge because of his father's death. Melvin and Helen farmed for many years southwest of Leigh on the Henry Engelbart farm and then rented from Adolph Wurdeman before retiring in 1984. Eric and Bertha Wurdeman had lived on Adolf's farm previously.
The Henry Engelbart farm had belonged to John Johannes but John owed Henry some money. In the Great Depression of the 1930's; he did not have any, so he gave Henry the land instead- per Ellen Johannes, April, 2000.
Melvin had been active in the Lutheran Laymen's League at Zion Lutheran Church and was a member of the American Legion in Leigh. He enjoyed baseball, bowling, and dartball. He and Helen were members of Jubilee Squares, a square dancing group. Melvin loved to travel and had been to Hawaii several times, on an Alaskan cruise, and had traveled to Australia. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren in their athletic activities. As a farmer, he took pride in making sure his cornrows were planted straight and driving his International 656 diesel tractor. He loved kids and also loved being entertained by his grandchildren.

Dear Melvin,
When the golden sun is sinking,
And your mind from care is free,
When of others you are thinking,
Will you sometimes think of me?
Your Sister,
Verona
