  _P_CCINFO 2-14330 From THE COLUMBUS (NE.) TELEGRAM, June 8, 2008- COLUMBUS -- Sylvia Olson, 92, of Columbus, died Friday, June 6, 2008, at Morys Haven in Columbus. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Leigh with the Rev. Terry Timm officiating. Interment will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Leigh. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday at Gass Haney Funeral Home and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church with a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Memorials are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church, Zion Cemetery or Leigh Cemetery. Sylvia Olson, the last survivor of 13 children, was born Dec. 27, 1915, in Leigh to John and Emma (Stejskal) Barta, who came to America from Czechoslovakia. Sylvia married her high school sweetheart, Arnold (A.T.) Olson, on Jan. 2, 1936, in Columbus. Sylvia was right by A.T.’s side helping with farming. To this marriage, five children were born -- Arnie Jr., Betty, Jane, Linda and Richard John, who died in infancy. They lived on the family farm in rural Leigh until moving to Columbus in 1996. Sylvia devoted her time and interest to her family and to her home. She had a love of flowers and her garden reflected the care she spent upon it. She was a good neighbor and a loyal friend. She had a special talent as a caregiver and a seamstress. Sylvia enjoyed baking, playing bingo, knitting and crocheting quilts for all her children and grandchildren. She will always be remembered for her special smile. Sylvia was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, the P.T.A. of Leigh Public School, Merry Farmerettes Extension Club and the Ladies Aid at church. Sylvia is survived by daughters, Betty Hamernik of Columbus, Jane Barr of Columbus, and Linda (Don) Fuhr of Osceola; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Elsie Barjenbruch of Columbus. Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, John and Emma Barta; her husband, Arnold Olson in 2002; son, Arnold Olson Jr.; infant son, Richard Olson; son-in-law, William Hamernik; son-in-law, Don Barr; daughter-in-law, Donna Olson; grandson, David Barr; infant granddaughter, Kristine Fuhr; seven brothers; and five sisters.
