Lawrence Gernstein, 79, of Leigh, Nebraska died Wednesday, December 28, 2005 at his home in Leigh.
The funeral service will be Saturday, December 31, 2005, 10:30 A.M. at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Leigh with Rev. Theresa Meyer officiating. Interment will be in the Leigh Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Sucha Post # 302 honor guard. Visitation will be on Friday, December 30 from 12:00 - 7:00 P.M. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Saturday from 9:30 - 10:30 A.M. at the church with a family prayer service at 10:15 A.M.
Lawrence Gernstein was born December 28, 1926 in Leigh, Nebraska to William & Louis (Feye) Gernstein. He was baptized on January 27, 1927 and confirmed on March 29, 1942 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Leigh. Lawrence attended school in Leigh and graduated from Leigh High School in 1945. He entered the U.S. Army on May 28, 1945. He served in WWII in the Military Police Unit and was honorably discharged on April 11, 1946. On September 27, 1947, Lawrence married Mercina Pimpara in Vermillion, South Dakota. They lived south of Leigh where they farmed most of their lives. Lawrence was a member of the American Legion Post #302 where he was on the honor guard for 55 years. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, and fishing.
