The Sander name was among the early pioneers that came to settle in Platte County in Sherman Township. On July 27, 1881, Henry Sander, on the day of his 17th birthday sailed into New York harbor with his maternal grandfather, Heinrich Hadelar. They came from Hanover which is located in the northern part of Germany. There they were farmers, and in spite of the fact that they worked hard, they were very poor. In hopes of finding a better life they came to the new country to escape the strict military obligations and the undesirable political and economic conditions of their homeland. It was Henry who was sent because the eldest son, Louis, was at that time in the military service. If they waited for him to finish, it would have been time for Henry to start his two years.

When Henry and Grandfather arrived, they journeyed to Nebraska to the Herman Bakenhus home. Mrs. Bakenhus was Heinrich Hadelar's sister. Here they sought to establish a place to live so the rest of the family could join them.

A couple of years later the grandmother, Christine Hadelar, her daughter Dorothea, and her husband Henry Sander and their nine other children came to this so-called "wild and uncivilized land" to make their home.

All ten children spent their entire adult lives in Nebraska. Mrs. Sander died at the young age of 49 years, and Henry lived on to be 92 years old. [ColfaxDeutschlandPlatte.FBK.FTW]
