LEIGH - Raymond M. Bakenhus, 72, of Leigh died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at Beverly Health care Center in Columbus.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church in rural Columbus with the Rev. Dr. Paul Rowoldt officiating. Burial will be at Leigh City Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Sucha Post 302.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Gass Haney Funeral Home in Columbus and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday at the church. There will be a Family Prayer Service at 10:15 a.m. Friday at the church.
Mr. Bakenhus was born April 19, 1929, in Platte County to William F. and Frieda (Korte) Bakenhus. He grew up on the family farm and attended Christ Lutheran School. He entered the U. S. Army on Feb. 12, 1952, and was involved in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged as a corporal on Feb. 14, 1954. He returned to the Leigh area and continued to farm.
He married Patricia Busse on April 20, 1950, in Leigh.
He was an active member of the American Legion in Leigh and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Clarkson. He also enjoyed playing cards. He was on the Board of Directors for the Farm Credit Services for 18 years.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Sue (Dave) Remter of Norfolk and Shelley (Arthur) Schreiber of Leigh; five grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Lake of Leigh and Eunice (Bob) Postma of Columbus; two brothers, Marvin (Hilda) Bakenhus and Arlo Bakenhus, both of Columbus; and one sister-in-law, Gerry Bakenhus of California.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Elmer Bakenhus and Lawrence Bakenhus.
