      From THE COLUMBUS (NE.) TELEGRAM, October 7, 2001-

      CLARKSON -- Hilger L. Wietfeld, 79, of Leigh died Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Clarkson.

      Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Leigh with the Rev. Mel Wiese officiating. Burial will be at the parish cemetery.

      Visitation is 3-8 p.m. today and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday, all at the church. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today at the church.

      Mr. Wietfeld was born March 23, 1922, in Howells to Anton and Rose (Widhelm) Wietfeld. He attended rural schools in the Howells area.

      He married Helen Kreikemeir on June 27, 1945, in Monterey. After they were married, they lived north of Howells for about five years. In 1951, they moved to the farm by Leigh. He farmed and did a lot of custom farming. In 1988, they moved into Leigh and he continued to farm.

      He was a member of the church. He enjoyed working and inventing in his workshop, especially with his welder.

      Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Marlene (Willie) Groteluschen of Columbus; four sons, Jim (Linda) Wietfeld, Larry (Vickie) Wietfeld, Paul Wietfeld and Kenny (Terri) Wietfeld, all of Leigh; one daughter-in-law, Cheryl Wietfeld-Johnson of Leigh; one brother, Don Wietfeld of West Point; 20 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

      He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Bob; and one brother, Marvin.
