Lena went to the local public school and attended Christ Lutheran German School for her confirmation instruction. Her parents kept as many as seventy-five children at their house in the cold winter months.

Lena enjoyed life and people and she was never boring. Her trademarks were hearty laughs and friendly smiles. Her life was characterized by a strong Christian faith to which she often bore witness to friends and family. She loved to sing the Lutheran Chorales and her favorite gospel songs.

Lena was a wonderful artist and drew many pictures of horses and dogs. Her family thought she could have been another "Grandma Moses". She would write poetry for self-enjoyment and also like to whittle wood; a specialty being whistles.

The local school district #48 had a debate group and initiated teams. Lena was a member of a team and really enjoyed entering the debates.

She was proud of her German heritage and subscribed to a German newspaper which she read thoroughly. She talked in German when her grandchildren were around so they could not understand what she was saying to their parents. She maintained good communication with her relatives in Germany and sent many CARE packages to them during and after WW II. She would tuck notes in the pockets and linings of clothes that she sent to them.

Lena loved the outdoors and gardening. Her specialty was petunias and strawberries. She ate a lot of chokecherries, including the stones, because she said "they keep things rolling".

Lena enjoyed her large family. She loved to play games with her grandchildren. She took them on nature walks, worked jigsaw puzzles with them, and read books to them. HEIDI was her favorite book.

From THE COLUMBUS TELEGRAM, June 26, 1923-

HENRY LOSEKE, SR., DEAD- At 2 o'clock this afternoon occurred the death of Henry Loseke, sr., at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L. H. Leavy, at the age of 85 years. He had been in fairly good health until two weeks ago when complications from his advanced years rendered him bedfast. Mr. Loseke was numbered among the oldest of the pioneers of Platte county, coming here in 1868, shortly after the town of Columbus was founded. From the soil, as a farmer and stock-raiser, he wrung a comfortable fortune, and has always been a leader in the agricultural interests in the county. Mr. Loseke was born in Oldenburg, Germany, October 11, 1837. He came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John H. Loseke, and three other children to America in 1858, the family settling on the creek that now bears the Loseke name. In 1864, he was married to Mrs. Kumpf, who died in September, 1909, and was buried in Columbus cemetery, where Mr. Loseke's remains will be interred beside those of his wife. After her death, Mr. Loseke made his home with his daughter, Mrs. L. H. Leavy. Besides this daughter, six other children survive him- Mrs. Wm. Reese, of Kearney, who arrived this afternoon; Henry Loseke, jr., of this city; Louis Loseke, on Route 1 out of Columbus; August Loseke, living north of Columbus, and Mrs. Wm. Bucher of Columbus, and Mrs. Henry Grotelueschen, of Columbus, the last two named being step-daughters. One brother, Gerhard Loseke, sr., also survives him. Funeral arrangements have not yet been perfected. Mr. Loseke, throughout his life was a devout member of the Lutheran church, and was one of founders of the Loseke Creek church, affiliating with the Columbus congregation when he moved into the city. Coming as he did in the early days of Platte county history, he had witnessed its progress from a barren prairie to a rich farming community, in the development of which he played no small part.

...Among the survivors, announced in yesterday's Telegram, the name of a sister, Mrs. Anna Ahrens, living north of Columbus, was inadvertently omitted.

    GROTELUSCHEN-GROTELUESCHEN

There are two variations in spelling. The information from a German source indicates that the spelling in Germany was and still is GROTELUSCHEN with the "u" having an umlaut (") over it. The umlaut is a diacritical mark that is added to a vowel that changes the sound of the German vowels a, i, o, and u. The variation in spelling came from the fact that there is no umlaut in the English language. For a phonetically correct English substitution, an "e" was added. The variations caused some problems. Other German names have the same characteristic. There is no definite answer as to which spelling is correct and neither is more correct than the other.

From THE COLUMBUS (NE.) JOURNAL, August 20, 1902-

GROTELUSCHEN - John Groteluschen, one of the old settlers of Platte county, died at his home on Shell creek last Wednesday, his ailment being Bright's disease of the kidneys, after one year's illness.

Mr. Groteluschen was born April 29, 1831, in Oldenburg, Germany, and came directly from there in 1866, to his farm in this county which he took as a homestead and on which he lived to the time of his death.

Mr. Groteluschen leaves a wife, four sons and six daughters to mourn the loss of a faithful husband and kind father. The sons are: Louis, Adolph, Emil and Otto; the daughters, Mrs. Ida Otte, Mrs. Lena Loseke, Mrs. Lizzie Loseke, and Misses Rosa, Bertha and Minnie. All live in this county with the exception of Louis who resides in Audubon, Iowa. There are also seventeen grandchildren who will remember their grandparent with reverence.

Funeral services were held at the German Lutheran church Friday at 12 o'clock, Rev. Friese conducting the service. The funeral was largely attended, over two hundred carriages, filled with sorrowing friends and acquaintances of the deceased, following the remains to their last resting place. GONE TO HER REST
    NEBO, Aug. 11, 1879

The funeral services of "Old Mother Loseke", wife of Jhon (sic) Henry Loseke, took place at the German Lutheran church, of which she was a lively member, Monday, the 11th of August. A large concourse of friends and acquaintances were in attendance to do homage to the memory of one who was respected by all who knew her. Her age was 69 years, 2 months, and 27 days. She leaves a husband and four children to lament her loss. She, with her husband and four children, immigrated to this country from Germany, in the year 1858, and settled in May of that year. Her four children live on well improved farms surrounding her home, and all are loved and respected as good neighbors and citizens. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Ernst Frese, pastor of the German Lutheran church of this place.
